CQC update on Re-building a trusted approach to regulation

CQC has set out how it will drive the improvements needed to re-build trust in our regulation.

This involves making immediate changes to support their response to the recommendations in the interim report from Dr Penny Dash and to improve ways of working ahead of the publication of the final report. These changes will help them to deliver:

  • a clear and transparent programme of assessment and ratings
  • quicker and more effective registration and assessments of providers
  • simpler and clearer reports.

Summary of immediate changes

  • They are currently recruiting a new Chief Executive and will appoint three Chief Inspectors to enhance leadership across the health and care sectors they regulate. In collaboration with Professor Sir Mike Richards and Professor Vic Rayner, Chair of the Care Provider Alliance, they are reviewing long-term improvements to the single assessment framework and its application.
  • Their work is being shaped by discussions with colleagues, providers, stakeholders, and feedback from individuals who use services and the public. Findings from the initial phase of Sir Mike’s review will be shared in the coming weeks, with further updates expected later in the year.
  • A pilot project is underway to explore better management of relationships with providers, beginning with NHS trusts and expanding to include groups of providers across various sectors. These pilots will continue until early next year, at which point they will decide how to implement the most effective approach.
  • Another pilot project is examining how operations managers can lead teams within specific sectors.
