Lincolnshire Teach and Treat: Expression of Interest GP DPPs
Message from Community Pharmacy Lincolnshire:
“We are trying to find GPs who would be open to acting as a Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP) for Community Pharmacists completing their Independent Prescribing qualification.
All students graduating from pharmacy from 2026 will leave university as Independent Prescribers, however those who graduated prior to this date working in community pharmacy will need to upskill to become prescribers. For these individuals it is essential to find a DPP willing to take on the role and with the necessary qualifications and expertise to support their learning and development. As part of the IP training programme the independent prescriber candidate is required to complete 90 hours of supervised practice of which usually at least half would be directly with the DPP themselves and a proportion may be with other relevant health practitioners such as an independent prescriber practice nurse or practice pharmacist for example. For the current CPL Teach and Treat Programme, once the community pharmacist has completed their DPP supervised content, the supervising GP will be able to access funding of £1,750 to cover the admin costs and their time needed to support the community pharmacist Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP) is a healthcare professional with legal prescribing rights who will mentor and supervise a pharmacist during the period of learning in practice.

To become a DPP you must be a registered medical practitioner, independent prescribing nurse, or pharmacist with at least three years of prescribing experience. If you were to express interest in being available as a DPP, Community Pharmacy Lincolnshire will add your details to our list, then if a pharmacist asks us for help in your area we would put them in touch with you. Once you have met each other you can then both decide if you would like to work together and support the community pharmacist in gaining their independent prescribing qualification.
We cannot guarantee that you will be asked to be a teach and treat DPP under this scheme, but we will try and access more funding in future if this round is successful in training Independent Prescribers in Community Pharmacy in Lincolnshire with the support of local general practices.
